What is NicSalt?
You may have seen the phrase “Nic Salt” or “Nicotine Salt” thrown around over the last few months and wondered exactly what this means. This Blog will go into details on precisely this and hopefully leave you with an in depth knowledge of Nicotine Salts and the ways in which they are used.
UNDERSTANDING “FREEBASE NICOTINE”
To gain a true understanding of exactly what nicotine salt is lets first look at the traditional “ freebase” nicotine used in most eliquids today.
“Freebase” is nicotine is in its purest form. Back in the 1960’s Tobacco companies discovered that by manipulating the pH levels in nicotine they were able to give consumers a bigger hit while using their cigarettes, in turn, making them more addictive. This form of nicotine was later adapted and blended with Vegetable glycerine, propylene glycol and flavourings to create some of the first e-liquids available on the market.
This being said, we are in no way knocking freebase nicotine as it serves a huge purpose and has helped in getting millions of people across the globe off of cigarettes.
To understand what nicotine salt is, we first need to understand how freebase nicotine works.
Nicotine in tobacco leaves has the chemical composition of a salt. A salt has a chemical reaction that has a positive and negative charge. Raw Nicotine has a weak base and made up of negatively charged particles. As a base, it seeks out positively charged particles to become stable. This stable (Ionised) state isn’t the best way to deliver nicotine into our system as ions struggle to move across organic matter and are not easily vaporised.
It was discovered that if the nicotine had its positive charge removed via the use of ammonia it is able to go back to its free state where it will be much easier to absorb into our bodies.
SO WHAT IS NICOTINE SALT?
To summarise it, Nicotine Salt basically allows you to vape at higher nicotine strengths without that harsh sensation on the throat you would typically get with “freebase” nicotine.
The ingredient that makes all this happen is benzoic acid.
Benzoic acid serves two important purposes in the production of salt nicotine:
- It helps nicotine salt vaporize at lower temperatures as well as lowering the pH levels in the salt nicotine resulting in a smoother throat hit
- It invokes a chemical reaction that makes nicotine more absorbable like freebase nicotine.
What this means is that you can use liquids with a higher nicotine content such as 20mg without suffering from the harsh hit to the throat making the experience of vaping smoother and more enjoyable. The added absorption properties also mean that you will find you may not feel the cravings for nicotine as often throughout the day, leading to vaping less often and saving yourself some money.
All in all this makes vaping a whole lot easier for people trying it for the first time, hopefully leading to many other giving vaping a go and quitting cigarettes for good.
